Colonia, Uruguay for One Happy Day

Colonia, the Prettiest city by the Sea

Uruguay is right next to Argentina, and many people living abroad in Buenos Aires get their tourist visas renewed by popping over to Uruguay via one hour ferry ride. Turns out, it’s a lovely day trip to this little port city, and worth the space in your itinerary.

Surrounded by quaint, picturesque buildings and cute hole in the wall wine bars, we basked in the sunshine and walked the entire town, which isn’t too big. There are some ruins and museums to check out too, but we mainly spent our day walking, taking photos, and having a leisurely lunch with some crisp white wine from the local region.

Regret for the day? That we didn’t have time to rent a sailboat!

We did explore the old Portuguese remains, a bridge and a lighthouse that you can climb up to the top for a nice view of the entire city. It’s not too strenuous, definitely doable for the exercise adverse.

Lush green vegetation lining all the roads, old vintage cars, delightful wine, a laid back feeling; Colonia is so beautiful and peaceful, it’s a wonderful respite from the bustling city life. You can also rent a golf cart for the day if you don’t feel like walking, but it’s such a walkable place. Everything was well maintained and taken care of, even though you can tell the buildings are old.

One day is enough to explore and catch some fresh air here. If I were to stay longer, I’d have liked to stay overnight and then travel to Montevideo in the morning. We decided that Uruguay would be another trip entirely that we would plan sometime soon. One piece of advice that I would give potential travelers is give yourself an hour before the ferry departs; traffic might be a little crazy like it was for us, and you do need your passports!

Happy Flying!
